The Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement (or 'MTVR') is a heavy-duty utility vehicle produced by Oshkosh Truck Corporation of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, USA. The 7-ton truck system was first fielded in 1998 and was initially conceived of as a modernized variant of the 5-ton utility trucks already in U.S. military service. As the project progressed, it became inevitable that the MTVR would become its own new series of 7-ton utility truck and was adopted as such. It has been taken on by the United States Navy and Marine Corps forces as a standard inventory addition. For the USMC, it towes the M777 howitzer piece. Several variants based on the original design have emerged including dump trucks, standard haulers, and specialized forms.
The MTVR features a 400+ horsepower turbocharged diesel-fueled engine mated to a seven-speed Allison HD 4070P automatic electronically-controlled WTEC III gearbox. Power drives all six road wheels while the truck is cleared to carry a payload of seven to fifteen tons depending on road surface (i.e. more payload can be applied when driving on smoother surfaces). The vehicle can fit different bed sizes behind the driver's cab. A powered S-20K series winch system with a capacity of 20,000lbs (9,072kg) is seen on some versions. The plethora of variants show the MTVR to be highly-adaptable system for major cargo-hauling roles. Typical armament is self-defense through machine guns of various calibers (also any personal weapons carried by the crew). Machine gun posts are featured above the driver's cab though the vehicle would typically be fielded in conjunction with more combat-oriented systems such as up-armored and armed HUMVEEs.
The cab (with seating room for three) is constructed out of extruded welded aluminum and features adhesive-bonded corrosion-resistant skin. A single-piece front windshield is standard as is a suspension-supported driver's seat. Air conditioning is an optional creature comfort in the cab. The MTVR itself is engineered to operate in temperature extremes between -50 degrees and 125 degrees (F). Other features include a Central Tire Inflation System (CTIS) with preset tire pressures and an automatic function triggered by the operator.
Available mission kits for the line include an arctic weather kit, a machine gun mounting kit, a chemical alarm kit, tire chain kit, and a few others. The MTVR is designed to be transported within the cargo hold of a heavy-lift Lockheed C-5 Galaxy, Boeing C-17 Globemaster III, Lockheed C-141 Starlifter, and a medium-lift Lockeed C-130 (though with some preparation). Transportation by a Skikorsky CH-53 heavy-lift helicopter is also possible.
The MTVR has seen combat service in the Afghanistan and Iraqi theaters of war with U.S. forces.
