You can resolve the Gmail queued and failed delivery error with basic troubleshooting steps like clearing app cache, adjusting the sync setting, relink Google account, and making sure that background data is enabled.
Recently I had Gmail Queued issue with my Gmail App for Android when sending out emails with attachment especially the PDF files. Though I was connected with hi-speed internet I was not able to send an email and most of the time it gets stuck in the outbox folder with Queued error message.
The email would get stuck in the Outbox for hours, and later it would change the status to “Failed”. Though my Outbox folder was completely empty, and there were no emails, it would still show as in the Queue error message.
I went ahead and tried some troubleshooting steps to fix the Gmail Queued error message and hence sharing below the same. I believe this will somehow help you in resolving if you ever encountered it again.
What does Queued mean in Gmail?
The queued means Gmail is unable to send the outbox mail immediately, however, it’s queued and will be attempted to send out later. There might be multiple reasons why it’s queued in Gmail. However, I’ve listed down a couple of come reason for being queued:

First and foremost thing that you need to make sure that only Gmail App is having an issue. And you’re able to send the emails with attachment via the Gmail Inbox web interface. This will help in assessing whether Gmail is down or not.
In-case, if you face the same issue on the web as well then these tips won’t resolve the issue as this could be an issue from the Gmail side.

These pre-requisites actually help in initial troubleshooting and making sure that we aren’t missing anything important from our end as part of the configuration.
Clear App’s cache and data from settings
You can simply clear the Gmail app cache and stored data from Phone Settings. Make sure that you’ve completely closed the Gmail app from the task manager.
- Open Phone Settings
- Select Application Manager
- Swipe to “All” apps
- Choose Gmail from available apps
- Hit Clear cache and data button
This will delete all the temporary cached files on the Android phone.
Try to enable and disable Gmail Sync temporarily
You should try enabling and disabling the Sync within your Android phone to make sure that functionality is working fine.
- Go to Settings option
- Select Accounts
- Choose Google Account
- Select the Email Account
- Uncheck Gmail and restart your phone
- After reboot, again enable the Checkbox
Try this multiple times in brief intervals in order to have hard sync in the Gmail app.
Remove Gmail Account and setup again
This is quite a cumbersome process. You need to completely remove the Google Account login from your phone and then log in again.
- Go to Settings
- Select Accounts options from the menu
- Choose Google Account from the list and
- Select the Email Account within
- Tap to Remove association completely for a while
- Clear cache and data from the Gmail app
- Reboot your phone and
- Reconfigure the Gmail Account in your phone
This will help in downloading the emails and set up again from scratch.

Decrease the days to sync option
Generally, whenever you configure the phone with Gmail, it only retrieves the emails for a few days. As and when you start using the Gmail App, it syncs with old emails as well. However, this will increase the cache and storage size for the app.
Hence, it’s a good idea to limit the sync to a maximum of 30 days. If there are any emails that are over 3days period, the Gmail app will automatically purge from the storage.
- Open Gmail App
- Go to Settings
- Select your account
- Tap on Days to sync
- Try limiting it to 30 days or even less
Clear the storage and cache once you change the settings so that data will be resynced.
Make sure to keep background data enabled
By default, the background data is enabled. However, if you mistakenly disabled the background data, then keep the option enabled.
- Go to Phone Settings
- Tap to Data Usage option
- Scroll down to “Gmail” App
- Make sure Restrict background data is not selected
Having said that, make sure you’re connected to a stable network, and there is no intermittent data network issue with your ISP or WiFi.

Do you have enough Storage Space?
One of the possibility to queue the email in the outbox is not having enough disk space on your mobile phone. Make sure to declutter all the useless files by deleting them and make enough room for new emails to send out.
Sending out an email will actually store the data in Gmail app storage, hence it’s necessary to have space in mobile to accommodate any incoming or outgoing emails.
What worked for you in resolving Gmail Queued?
When I removed my Gmail account from the Android phone and later reconfigured – it worked perfectly! I checked the Outbox folder to see if the mail with attachment still lying in the folder, but later found the mail got through the mailbox and available in the Sent folder.

Gmail has certain limits in place and you only send or receive a limited number of emails per day. The daily limits are 2000 email messages for Google Apps (G Suite) accounts and 500 for consumer Gmail accounts.
It is important to know that Gmail sending limits are per user and are shared by all of the user’s email clients, including web apps, software programs, SMTP clients and add-ons that could be sending emails through your Gmail account.
For instance, if you have sent 300 emails through the Gmail website, 50 emails through Microsoft Outlook linked to your Gmail account via IMAP or POP, and another 100 messages through an email alias on a different domain, the maximum number of emails you can send through the Mail Merge addon will be just 50 in that 24 hour period.
If you exceed the sending limit, you’ll get an error message – like “you’ve reached a Gmail limit for sending email” or “Oops. the system encountered a problem” – and Gmail may sometimes temporarily block you from sending new messages. The limits are not applied at any set time of the day and the user may have to wait up to 24 hours before the limits are reset automatically.
[*] The daily sending limit is even lower – 100 total recipients per day – if you are using Microsoft Exchange or any non-Google SMTP service for routing messages through Gmail email servers.
Email Bounced – Your Message Was Not Sent
If you get a bounced email from [email protected] – with the message saying “An error occurred, your message was not sent” or “You have reached a limit for sending email, your message was not sent” – it indicates that you have reached the Gmail sending limit for the day.
There’s no workaround to this problem and you’ll have to wait until Gmail resets your email quota. After the quota is reset, you can resend the message to the same recipients and they should be delivered as normal.
Your messages can also bounce if you are sending too many emails to non-existent email addresses. It is thus important to clean up your mailing lists and remove invalid email addresses before running another Mail Merge campaign.
